The Community Improvement Award winners have been announced. Their information is in the next section below.
Acoustic Corner was nominated and selected for an award because they painted the exterior of the building, cleaned up the front and installed lovely flowers and containers. The entrance looks beautiful and inviting. Winner 6/24
The Laundry and Refillery was nominated and won for the work they did to the building to clean up the exterior while maintaining the integrity of the building. Winner 6/24
Laura Downing and her husband did extensive work to turn their property into a beautiful garden of edible landscaping, complete with grape vines, fig trees, vegetables and more. Winner 6/24
Sally Webster transformed her front lawn on Connelly St into a beautiful rose and pollinator garden with wandering paths throughout the garden. Winner 6/24
Wendy’s located at 591 NC 9. When they built the new building, they did an extraordinary job landscaping the entire area. Winner 9/23
The Gem Drop, 104 Broadway, received the award for their two beautiful window boxes. Winner 9/23
Morning Sky Pottery located at 112 Cherry Street. They planted and maintained a large area that sits above the stonewall on Cherry Street. Winner 9/23
Ellie Stanley who lives at 119 Vance Avenue. Such a wonderful garden to view looking over the fence. Over time many plants were incorporated into this area. Winner 9/23
Annie Hall lives at Givens Highland Farms and purchased her home because of the large garden area. “I grew up with flowers, have had gardens everywhere I've ever lived and this small one is my favorite, as we are only planting native plants and flowers so my garden THRIVES with birds, butterflies and all sorts of ‘critters’.”
St. James Episcopal Church spent over a year transforming the overgrown space behind and beside the church into a multi-tiered tranquil and peaceful garden. There are three distinct areas of the garden, including space for outdoor memorial services and a labyrinth.
The Pure & Proper received the award for the work they have done to remake their property in this historic part of our town. In addition to the restoration of the old service station, they removed asphalt that was in front and added a green space with beautiful landscaping.
Trailhead Restaurant transformed a crabgrass and weed area beside their deck into an inviting garden area. Succulents and sedum that will survive the heat from the sun and the black top parking lot were planted. For the railing they added a black wooden mountain range on spindles and a rock trail below.
The Grange won the CIA Award for putting a lot of thought and energy into re-landscaping this property. Thanks to Seamus Shevlino being on hand to accept the award. Winner 12/22.
The Grange installed a number of bushes and hardscape around the outdoor restaurant which draw people into make it a fun place to go.
The Garzarelli recently landscaped the slope in front of their home down to the street making it a beauty spot. Winner 12/22.

Hurt Architecture and Planning, 115 Midland Ave. They transformed a nondescript gravel parking lot
with fencing and beautiful plantings. Winner 9/22.
Black Mt Bistro, 203 E. State Street
The outdoor space was carefully redesigned to make customers and furry friends comfortable year around. Winner 9/22.
Jean Franklin, 108 Connally St.
With the design work and planting of Emily Sampson, Jeannie has turned the front yard into a sanctuary. Winner 9/22,

Mellie has done a fabulous job of transforming her location. Winner 9/22.
This award is sponsored by Black Mountain Beautification Committee to highlight businesses and residents who have taken pride in the curb appeal of their property.
The Program recognizes those who add beauty to the neighborhood with landscaping and maintenance of their properties.
Winners will be acknowledged with a decorative property sign to display in their properties, gift certificate to a local business, announcement in the paper, and on social media.
Proceeds for this award were raised at the Black Mountain Garden Show and Sale.
Criteria will be based on new and/or ongoing improvements to a property to increase its curb appeal for areas viewed from the street or that the public can enjoy. Factors include:
1. Well maintained, attractive property with pruned shrubs/trees, landscaped beds, and mowed lawn.
2. Property is litter free.
3. Buildings and fences are in good repair as not to distract from the landscape.
4. Made improvements to the outdoor area of the property that increased curb appeal or common areas that the community can enjoy.
5. Incorporating sustainable practices.
1. Properties located in Black Mountain
2. Residential and commercial properties are eligible.
3. As many as 4 awards can be given in June and September to residents and businesses.
3. Community and committee can nominate candidates
4. The award will be at the discretion of the committee or by the majority vote of the award committee.
5. All Improvement Property Recipients will receive a gift certificate from a local business plus be eligible for "Most Improved Property" recognition and prize. Awarded in December from all properties recognized in current year.
